George Augustus Sala failed to provide the final chapters of this serialised novel in as timely a fashion as Dickens required. This was because he was in the United States of America covering the Civil War for the Daily Telegraph. After a hiatus of 3 weeks, the serialisation was resumed by a new author recruited by Dickens – Andrew Halliday.
